Hobart PCYC Delivers a Great Night of Boxing in Sorell
Published Mon 14 Sep 2026
Hobart PCYC welcomed the Tasmanian boxing community to Sorell Memorial Hall on Saturday, 12 September, for a fantastic night of amateur boxing, bringing together boxers, coaches, officials, families and supporters from across Tasmania and interstate.

The 12-bout card featured a mix of competitive contests and exhibition bouts, with boxers ranging from those stepping into the ring for some of their first experiences through to more experienced competitors.
Adding to the occasion, boxers travelled from both Victoria and Western Australia to compete, making the trip across Bass Strait to be part of the tournament. Boxing Tasmania would like to sincerely thank all interstate boxers, coaches and supporters who made the journey. Their involvement adds another dimension to our local tournaments and gives Tasmanian boxers valuable opportunities to meet new opponents.
There was a fantastic atmosphere inside Sorell Memorial Hall throughout the evening, with a DJ adding to the energy as the bouts unfolded and a strong crowd getting behind the competitors.

One of the highlights of the night was Bout 10 between Hobart PCYC’s Matthew Aylett and Blackwell Boxing Troupe’s Sam Betts, which was recognised as Fight of the Night. It was one of many entertaining contests on a card that showcased both developing talent and experienced amateur boxers.
While the boxers are the ones under the lights, tournaments like this simply could not happen without the people working behind the scenes.
A huge thank you goes to Supervisor Ben Powell; referees Gary Cooper and Ava Powell; judges Luke Woods, Sean Riley, Luke Blackwell, Trent McKenzie, Ava Powell and Mark Chapman; timekeeper Will Sutton; glove steward Monty Jackson; and doctors Dr Bekithemba Bulle and Dr Nicholas Oen for giving their time and expertise to ensure the tournament was conducted safely and professionally.
Our officials and volunteers play an enormous role in amateur boxing. Long before the first bell and well after the final bout, there are people weighing athletes in, preparing equipment, completing paperwork, managing the venue and making sure everything happens as it should. Boxing Tasmania is incredibly appreciative of everyone who contributes their time to allow our athletes to compete.
Special recognition must also go to Hobart PCYC coach Karen Jackson, who put an enormous amount of work into pulling the event together. Organising a tournament is no small task, and the success of Saturday night reflected the work that went into it.

Thank you also to Hobart PCYC, the coaches, volunteers, families, supporters and everyone else who contributed to the evening. It was another strong night for amateur boxing in Tasmania and a great example of what can be achieved when our boxing community comes together.
